Late Summer Book Review!
Is summer almost gone? Can’t be! To Cheer you up here are some great reads for the late days of summer. As always, it’s a wonderful mix of titles for every taste.
Wife, Widow, Now What: How I Navigated The Cancer World and How You Can, Too, written by Rachel Engstrom M.S.W., C.H.E.S, is a remarkable memoir, raw, authentic, and honest using narrative and actual Facebook and Instagram posts created during her caregiver journey making it a relatable and a must-read for our younger generation caregivers as well as anyone who has traveled on a similar path. The wisdom and strength shown and shared here are extraordinary. Rachel was 28 when her husband Greyson was diagnosed with Leukemia and her memoir takes us through that journey and beyond as she starts her life over.
One Simple Breath: A Caregiver’s Guide to Inner Peace, written by Patty Collamer is now on my bedside table forever. Written with love and personal truth by someone who has been there, this easy-to-read and understand guide is a perfect antidote to caregiver stress and burnout. Everything from caregiver isolation to joy is covered here, with gentle instructions on how to breathe, affirm and work our way through the difficult journey of caregiving with self-love.
They say we are all just walking each other home. This beautiful sentiment is clearly expressed in No Regrets: Hope for Your Caregiving Season, written by Rayna Neises. This beautifully written account of caregiving describes a path that can be filled with hope and joy. Practical caregiver advice and invaluable tips abound here as well as heartwarming personal stories that make you laugh and cry. My personal favorite involves a ping pong table which immediately reminded me of my Dad and his ability to hit the end zone for points my entire life, always beating me!
Maryann Makekau has done a remarkable job addressing extremely important issues by writing When Your Mom has Cancer: Helping Children Cope at Home and Beyond and the companion book, When Your Grandma Forgets: Helping Children Cope with Alzheimer’s and Beyond. The thought behind these smart, informative, and captivating books is to give children a solid understanding of how to cope with Alzheimer’s, and Cancer, and the big feelings and thoughts these conditions can bring up for children. These are valuable, insightful, and vibrantly illustrated books that can open the door to difficult conversations and make them easier for the entire family.
Be Your Own Medical Intuitive: Healing Your Body and Soul, written by healer, writer, and teacher Tina M. Zion is an exciting guide to healing our bodies and souls by getting in touch with our intuitive self.
