Hello Caregiver Warriors! This special book review focuses on nurturing ourselves through spiritual focus, finding caregiving grace and the miraculous effect music has on us. I love the different approaches taken by each author as they guide us on the same path. Enjoy.

Navigating the Caregiver River: A Journey to Sustainable Caregiving by Theresa Wilbanks is a beautifully written guide to riding the ever-changing and treacherous caregiving river with grace and agility. By sharing her personal caregiver story, strength, hope, and experience, she creates a safe vessel that can carry any caregiver safely to shore. There is so much wisdom, practical strategy and solution found here that I recommend this as a must-read for both new and experienced caregivers. This is the perfect antidote to feeling alone, crazy, and overwhelmed as a caregiver. Treat yourself to this powerful guidebook to sustainable caregiving.

The Tao of Inner Peace written lovingly and respectfully by Diane Dreher is a treasure. Her profound appreciation for the Tao Te Ching, the ancient spiritual guide handbook written over 25 Centuries ago, shines on every page. This is a wonderful guide to understanding one of the greatest spiritual books of all time, offering explanations, meditations, writing prompts, clarifying questions, and practical exercises. Drawing wisdom from a well-versed collection of prophets, poets, teachers, and her own life, she treats us to self-examination and appreciation. Within these pages are wisdom, curiosity, guidance, and the path to enlightenment.

We are all in a quest for peace and joy in our lives, especially during these turbulent times and most certainly during our caregiving journey. I believe we all have a divine self that, when nurtured, can guide us to a more fulfilled and empowered life. The Still Point: The Simplicity of Spiritual Enlightenment by Kevin Krenitsky, MD, is a magical guide to spiritual enlightenment and the ability to find that place within us that is sacred and ever-present. The book is written in a profound question-and-answer style, and I found myself fascinated by the flow of wisdom and explanation. This is a must-read for your soul and spirit to flourish and thrive.

No one needs to prove the power of music to me. Not only was I a singer-songwriter for most of my younger life, I also enjoyed a spectacular career in the music industry. I have seen music move mountains and have an extraordinarily positive impact on so many lives. The Gatekeeper, written by Lauren Knatz, is a fascinating account of her passionate mission to bring songs, singing, and joy to patients in palliative care. Her love of oral history and fascination with the effect of songs and singing on end-of-life patients has put her on a path of serving that community as a conduit of peace and healing. Describing singing sessions with actual patients and providing historical background on the many hymns and songs in her repertoire, she gives an insider’s look at music and healing.

I always enjoy sharing new book finds with you and love your feedback! Let me know your favorites!
